VP, Head of Privacy Legal - Marqeta

Remote Opportunity

Our client, Marqeta, a public fintech company HQ in Oakland, is looking for a Privacy leader to join the legal team. Reporting directly into the Chief Legal Officer, the VP, Head of Privacy will be responsible for building and scaling the privacy and security legal function. This person will be responsible for working in close partnership with cross functional teams to provide strategy, thought leadership and expertise to help us develop and implement a global data privacy and security program.

Responsibilities:

  • Build, scale, and drive a global legal strategy to holistically manage all data privacy and security related matters impacting the company’s business
  • Serve as lead legal resource and partner closely with Compliance, Product, Revenue, Security Engineering, and other cross-functional teams to help develop scalable solutions that enable product innovation, international expansion and protect personal and financial data records
  • Advise and collaborate with Compliance, Marketing, Technology, HR and other internal teams to assess and implement privacy governance programs; including providing requirements for cross-border data transfers, data localization, vendor compliance and review and updating relevant privacy and cookie policies
  • Provide legal guidance and support to company’s Tech Compliance, Security and Infrastructure teams, advising on information security requirements, incident preparedness, response and breach notification obligations, communication plans and remediation
  • Monitor, track and assess the rapidly evolving landscape of privacy and cybersecurity laws and regulation
  • Advise Company-wide privacy and security training program (including Board level training)
  • Develop and mentor internal counsel
  • Effectively manage outside counsel and legal budgets

Requirements:

  • JD and admitted to a state bar
  • 12+ years’ substantive privacy and data security experience
  • Expert and detailed knowledge of GDPR and familiarity with other global privacy frameworks (e.g. Canada, Australia, and LATAM)
  • Knowledge of privacy laws applicable to financial data (e.g. GLBA) and other emerging federal and state privacy laws (e.g. CCPA; COPPA and TCPA )
  • Substantial knowledge of information security laws, industry standards and best practices, including NIST Cybersecurity Framework, PCI-DSS, and FFIEC guidance
  • Understanding of security infrastructure and the payments industry
  • Ability to interact, develop and discuss strategy with senior management
  • A solid business focus with practical risk awareness
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to distill complex legal considerations into practical actionable advice
  • Sense of humor with a high level of emotional intelligence and self-awareness
