Commercial Counsel - Cardless

Remote Opportunity

Our client, Cardless is seeking a Commercial Counsel to join their fast-growing legal and compliance team working on building custom credit card programs for brands. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, the Commercial Counsel will be the first one and serve as the company point of contact for all contract-related matters including building and maintaining a best-in-class, contract management system.

Responsibilities:

  • Work on the entire contracts process including reviewing, drafting, negotiating and approving a wide range of contracts including but not limited to brand partner agreements, vendor partnership and supplier agreements, nondisclosure agreements and other agreements facilitating Cardless’ business
  • Create and maintain a scalable contracts management system and develop best practices internally to ensure that contracts are managed in a consistent and timely manner
  • Partner with internal teams to provide legal counsel and advice on the development of new product features, launches and business initiatives
  • Translate commercial legal issues into relevant business risks and advise business teams and provide a solutions-oriented legal guidance
  • Effectively and efficiently manage outside counsel resources
  • Be an effective advisor and counselor across the company regarding the contract terms and interface effectively cross-functionally to encourage progress
  • Be the company expert on the core contractual documents
  • Build and maintain consistency in terms of contractual provisions across similarly situated contracts

Requirements:

  • Minimum 7+ years of relevant experience as a commercial contracts attorney or in-house counsel providing commercial transaction advice, ideally in a fintech or high-growth environment
  • Proven experience successfully negotiating complex commercial agreements with banks, credit unions and other highly-regulated financial institutions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to influence both internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to work cross-functionally within the organization and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous and unstructured environment
  • Active bar license and in good standing with the California Bar or currently serving as Registered In-House Counsel

  • Cardless regularly brings their team together for offsites & trips, about every 2 months, both for fun and for work. They cover all travel & lodging in these cases.
