About the Role:

Uber is seeking a seasoned legal executive with 15+ years of labor and employment experience to lead their labor and employment legal team. The AGC, Labor & Employment will be highly strategic and creative, working on some of the most groundbreaking issues that influence all aspects of Uber’s business with a focus on supporting the independent work of platform earners. Reporting directly to the Chief Legal Officer this role will have significant interaction with Uber’s legal and business leadership, as well as key external stakeholders like regulators and advocacy groups.

The successful candidate will utilize their background and expertise to drive creative, practical, and proactive legal advice impacting both app-based work and traditional employment. This person will be a working leader, manager, and mentor of a global labor and employment legal team which consists of approximately ~20 unparalleled legal professionals . This position can be based in San Francisco, Washington D.C., Chicago, or New York City.

What You'll Do:

  • Be a trusted advisor to senior leadership, operation managers, Uber's HR team and other stakeholders, and provide critical legal and strategic advice on a wide range of complex issues involving Uber's employees, workers, and independent contractors, including but not limited to:
  • Thought leader and partner to the CLO and management in creating an affirmative legal strategy to change labor and employment laws defining the future of IC legislation and policies globally for the next 5-10 years.
  • Lead worker classification litigation, future of work initiatives and strategy, and product advice while proactively managing compliance with employment statutes and regulations.
  • Handle a wide variety of employment matters, including hiring, background checks, contingent worker relationships, performance management, employee relations, leaves of absence and accommodations, discrimination and harassment laws, wage and hour, internal investigations, compensation/benefits and termination issues.
  • Strategically resolve employment and compliance-related litigation, claims, investigations, subpoenas, etc.
  • Provide global employment law strategies and guidance to address business challenges and create organizational alignment.
  • Create the vision and strategy to preserve IC benefits while taking advantage of traditional employment benefits (wage protection, health insurance, etc).
  • Think outside the box to provide creative, strategic, and proactive legal advice to internal business groups. Possess the ability to peer around corners for the business and ensure that Uber is  well positioned for the future.
  • Inspire and lead a strong global team aligned and prepared to implement Uber's legal and business strategies as it relates to labor and employment matters. Mentor and develop the team to meet business priorities and goals, as well as cultivate the individual career development of each team member. Have experience encouraging a team culture based on empathy, collaboration, mutual respect, and genuine curiosity about each team member.
  • Communicate sophisticated concepts in a clear and structured manner. Work closely and cross-functionally to support Uber's goals and priorities.

Professional Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of experience in private practice, government service, and/or in-house role.
  • Law degree from an accredited institution and active membership in good standing in at least one state bar.
  • Labor relations expertise desired.
  • Proven track record in building and leading an elite team of lawyers and legal professionals.
  • Superior analytical and legal skills, mature judgment, innovative thinking and a desire to take the initiative, think two steps ahead, and deliver creative solutions.
  • Ability to translate complex legal issues and ambiguity into clear and simple advice and to communicate effectively with non-legal internal colleagues.
  • Highly collaborative teammate, and ability to build deep relationships across teams and functions.
  • Demonstrate high EQ, a growth mindset and intellectual curiosity.
  • Have superior leadership, management and process, and relationship building skills.
  • Executive presence exemplified by excellent business judgment, communication and interpersonal skills to inspire and influence employees at every level.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and influence, persuade, and build consensus as well as thrive in high impact/high profile situations.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and growing into new areas of responsibility, with self-starter qualities.
  • Unquestioned integrity and ethics in business and personal conduct.
